When repetition is a signal

CatalogBeacon flags repeated populated alt-text values within one product gallery. The flag is a review prompt, not a claim that every repeated phrase is invalid. If two images are functionally identical, a shared description may be reasonable.

  • Open the images in order before editing.
  • Prioritize galleries where the repeated text is only the product name or ‘product image’.

Describe the difference

Use the visible angle or feature to distinguish views: front, side, back, close-up, packaging, scale, or a visible mechanism. Keep the core product name when it prevents ambiguity, then add the specific view.

  • Example: ‘ceramic pour-over dripper, side profile with ridged cone’.
  • Do not mention a feature that is outside the crop or hidden by a model.

Coordinate with variant media

Some themes show variant-specific images. Make sure alt text does not claim a color or size that belongs to another variant. If a gallery image is reused across variants, choose wording that remains true for all of them.

  • Review variant selection and image order on the storefront.
  • Avoid changing media metadata while a product migration is in progress.

How the app handles it

The audit shows the repeated values and the affected product. CatalogBeacon can prepare reviewable alt-text drafts, but it does not silently rewrite an entire gallery. Merchants can approve only the rows where a distinct description is warranted.

  • Keep rejected values documented when repetition is intentional.
  • Use the same evidence-first review for missing and generic alt text.

Do not turn alt text into a keyword list

Replacing a repeated phrase with a set of near-synonyms does not improve accessibility. A gallery description should help someone understand the image, not enumerate every phrase a shopper might search.

  • Prefer one accurate sentence fragment per image.
  • Measure success by clarity and task completion, not by keyword count.

Frequently asked questions

Is duplicate alt text a Google penalty?

No. It is a content-quality and accessibility review signal. Fix it when the images show meaningfully different views, but do not invent differences that are not visible.

Can I use the same alt text for a color swatch?

A swatch should identify the color or option it represents when that information is useful. Keep it short and consistent with the variant label.
