What the rule detects

CatalogBeacon compares the number of product images with the number of populated alt-text values. When the counts differ, the product is listed for review. Decorative images may deserve an empty value, but product images that convey the item should normally be described.

  • Check each gallery image rather than copying one sentence to all of them.
  • Use an empty value only when the image is genuinely decorative and the theme supports that choice.

Write what a shopper needs

Describe the product and the visible view: ‘navy linen apron, front view with cross-back straps’ is more useful than ‘apron image’. Mention color, material, shape, or a visible feature when it distinguishes the view.

  • Keep the wording concise and factual.
  • Do not start with ‘image of’ unless the context requires it.

Avoid repeated gallery text

A gallery often contains several views of the same item. Repeating the exact title on every image gives little image-specific context. Vary the description by angle or visible detail while keeping the product identity clear.

  • Use ‘side view’, ‘close-up of weave’, or ‘back detail’ when those facts are visible.
  • Do not describe details that the image does not show.

CatalogBeacon review workflow

The app flags missing alt text and prepares drafts for supported image fields. The draft is visible before application, and the merchant can edit or reject it. This keeps factual product description under human review instead of publishing generic text in bulk.

  • Review alt text with the actual image open.
  • Re-scan after the approved values are written to Shopify.

Validate after publishing

Check the rendered HTML and storefront image component after saving. Theme or app code can replace, hide, or duplicate media, so a clean admin field alone does not prove the customer-facing page is correct.

  • Keep the canonical product URL and image URL stable where possible.
  • Treat alt text as accessibility content first, not a ranking shortcut.

Frequently asked questions

How long should Shopify alt text be?

Use the shortest wording that identifies the relevant visible content. There is no safe keyword-count formula; clarity matters more than filling a character target.

Should every image use the product title as alt text?

No. The title can be part of the description, but each useful gallery view should add its own visible detail rather than repeating identical text.
